National Education
What is National Education?
As a significant aspect of Character and Citizenship Education (CCE), NE comprises a wide range of school efforts that aims to:
-
Provide our students with the knowledge, skills and values to understand Singapore's history, realities and challenges unique to our nation, appreciate our journey to nationhood, cultivate the instincts for survival as a nation, and have confidence in our nation's future.
-
Be empowering and aspirational, allowing for individual sense-making, to nurture engaged citizens, who are socially aware, adept at critical thinking, and informed about local, regional and global issues.
-
Help our students experience and explore their national identity as Singaporeans and foster a strong sense of belonging, reality, and hope which motivates our students to play a contributory role in their immediate communities and in the nation while they seek to achieve their personal life goals.
The National Education objectives are to develop national cohesion, the instinct for survival and confidence in the future,
-
by fostering a sense of identity, pride and self-respect as Singaporeans;
-
by knowing the Singapore story – how Singapore succeeded against the odds to become a nation;
-
by understanding Singapore’s unique challenges, constraints and vulnerabilities, which make us different from other countries; and
-
by instilling the core values of our way of life, and the will to prevail, that ensures our continued success and well-being.
National Education in Yuhua Secondary
Yuhua Secondary School proudly commemorates four National Education Days: Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day, Racial Harmony Day, and National Day. Additionally, the school organizes a National Service Engagement for Secondary 2 students, inviting an alumnus currently serving in the national service to share his experiences, helping students appreciate their commitment to the nation. The NRIC Ceremony for Secondary 3 students further emphasizes the essence of being a Singapore citizen, fostering a sense of identity and responsibility within the community.
Total Defence Day
Total Defence Day was commemorated, under the theme "TD40: Together We Keep Singapore Strong." This year's focus was on Singaporeans' readiness and resilience in facing crises and disruptions, emphasizing that every citizen plays a role in preparing for challenges. Yuhua Secondary participated in the Food Resilience Experience, allowing students to experience emergency packed meals during recess. Additionally, the school conducted its annual Total Defence Readiness Programme, organized by the uniform groups, to further enhance awareness and preparedness among students.
International Friendship Day
Our school commemorated Embracing Diversity: Celebrating International Friendship during the CCE lesson. The event, held via Zoom, aimed to foster cultural understanding, highlight the importance of international friendship, and showcase the rich diversity within our school community. The programme began with pre-recorded presentations from international students representing Myanmar, the Philippines, and Bangladesh. Students then participated in a Kahoot quiz based on the presentations, encouraging engagement and teamwork across classrooms. Prizes were awarded to top-performing classes, concluding the event with reflections on the power of friendship in fostering global unity and cooperation.

Racial Harmony Day
Racial Harmony Day was commemorated with the theme Singapore - Our Multicultural Mosaics. The programme aimed to deepen students’ understanding of Singapore's rich cultural diversity, focusing on respect for all ethnicities. The week-long commemoration began with a cultural exploration booth, featuring ethnic costume displays, traditional games, and interactive activities such as a polaroid photo booth. Additionally, Yuhuans acted as cultural ambassadors, presenting Singapore’s various cultures to visiting students from China. On Racial Harmony Day itself, students participated in a TikTok Challenge showcasing ethnic dances, reinforcing unity amidst diversity.
NS Engagement
The National Service engagement session is held annually for all Secondary 2 students. Its aim is to familiarize students with the National Service experience and address any questions they may have, while inspiring them to view this phase as meaningful. Through this session, students will develop a positive outlook on their future National Service and recognize their vital role in national defense. At the end of the session, students feel encouraged about their upcoming experiences and understand the importance of their contributions to the nation, fostering a sense of responsibility and commitment.

By the end of the programme, students should appreciate the importance of the NRIC and their status as Singapore citizens, while also developing empathy for those who face challenges in gaining citizenship. This initiative encourages a deeper understanding of their identity and responsibilities.
